Summer Agronomy Assistant (Contract: May 6th –Aug. 30, 2024)
Hours: 35-44 hours/week
Location: Chatham-Kent Essex, Lambton Kent Middlesex
Job Description:
Tomecek Agronomy Services is an independent crop consulting business that has been providing unbiased agronomic strategies to farmers since 2001. The Agronomy Assistant will work closely with the company's Agronomists to gather comprehensive field data by scouting clients' fields (primarily processing tomatoes, sugar beets, peppers and pumpkins).
Major activities include:
- Observing & identifying different crop pests (i.e. insects, weeds, and disease), and determining their incidence, distribution and severity
- Using Integrated Pest Management techniques to determine treatment thresholds
- Assessing overall crop condition
- Assisting Agronomist in determining crop nutrient and crop protection strategies
- Taking soil samples, and measuring soil moisture levels
- Inputting observations and geo-referencing points accurately into company's mobile data management system (via cellular tablets)
- Collecting samples for on-going research projects
Additional Requirements:
- Must have knowledge of the common pests (i.e. insects, weeds, and diseases) and general farming practices
- Must have good observational skills and attention to detail
- Good written communication skills to accurately report findings
- Able to work well independently
- Must have a valid Ontario Driver's License, and willing to travel to rural locations
- Full access to a vehicle considered an asset, but not necessarily required
- Must have the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions (i.e. heat, rain, etc.) with moderate physical activity involved, including walking through fields for long periods of time.
- Must be between the ages of 15-30 years of age at the start of employment (as this position falls under the "Canada Summer Jobs" program)
- Must be currently enrolled or recently graduated from a college or university level agriculture program (preferably Horticulture, Agronomy and/or Soil Science)
- Must be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person whom refugee protection has been conferred, and is legally entitled to work in Canada as of May 8, 2023.
- Must have Social Insurance Number
